The 1993 In Utero Tour was unlike anything Nirvana had done before. Kurt Cobain decorated the stage with anatomical mannequins and models sourced from medical supply stores, setting the tone for a show that was deliberately confrontational. Former Germs guitarist Pat Smear joined as second touring guitarist, thickening the live sound and giving Cobain the freedom to push further into feedback and noise. Cellist Lori Goldston added a haunting orchestral texture to All Apologies and Pennyroyal Tea. Rather than leaning on Nevermind hits, the band dug into abrasive In Utero cuts and obscure early tracks like Spank Thru and Blew to challenge casual listeners. The MTV Unplugged session in November 1993 — acoustic, intimate, no big hits — became one of the most celebrated live recordings in rock history. Their Live and Loud concert at Seattle Pier 48 in December remains the defining visual document of the tour.
