The Icarus — or Falling Angel — loomed over Led Zeppelin's 1977 US Tour as a colossal stage backdrop, designed by Hipgnosis and based on William Rimmer's 1869 painting Evening (The Fall of Day). Though fans adopted it as Icarus, Rimmer's original depicted a fallen angel — Lucifer himself. The image had already served as the logo for Swan Song Records, the band's own label founded in 1974 to give artists total creative freedom. The 1977 tour was one of the most spectacular rock productions ever staged — towering speaker stacks, pyrotechnics, synchronized lasers — but it was cut short in July when Robert Plant received news of the sudden death of his five-year-old son Karac. The remaining dates were cancelled immediately. This design remains one of the most iconic and emotionally charged graphics in rock history.
