Green Day's musical DNA was forged at 924 Gilman Street — an all-ages, volunteer-run punk collective in Berkeley operating under a strict code: no major label acts. Billie Joe Armstrong and Mike Dirnt had been playing the Gilman scene since 1987, building a reputation in the tight-knit DIY community. Then in 1993 they signed to Reprise Records to record Dookie — and were immediately and permanently banned from the venue that made them. The album that exiled them from home sold 20 million copies.

"Basket Case", the song that defined it, has an origin as raw as the music. Armstrong wrote the earliest demo during a dark and chaotic period in his life, initially envisioning it as a slow love ballad. He turned his life around, scrapped everything, and started again. The chord progression he landed on was Pachelbel's Canon in D, sped up into an anxious, driving punk arrangement. The lyrics — "Do you have the time to listen to me whine?" — were his attempt to process panic attacks and anxiety he'd suffered his entire life but never had diagnosed. It spent five weeks at the top of the Billboard Alternative Songs Chart.
